For Your Reference
Here is basic information about maiko, geiko and geisha. Geisha, or a professional entertainer, is more popularly known to foreigners along with Fujiyama, or Mt. Fuji, than maiko, literally "dancing girl." Maiko is an apprentice geisha on the training stage with an aspiration to become a full-fledged geisha lady by acquiring artistic talents such as singing traditional songs, dancing to classical songs and playing the "shamisen" (Japanese banjo) while serving food and drinks at a feast.
Maiko is thus mostly a teenager before getting on to geiko, or similarly party hostess, in about five years Geiko stands in between maiko and geisha.
They are bonded to geisha houses called okiya in Gion quarters or somewhere else named hanamachi located at downtown Kyoto and sent out to ochaya teahouses for a banquet or a private party.
When in Kyoto, perhaps you may see beautifully-adorned, kimono-clad maiko girls wearing platform sandals and making sounds stepping on the stone-paved street.
One of the great sights of Kyoto tourism is the scene of photographing maiko girls with a long sash hanging loosely from long sleeved kimono and a glossy obidome brooch. Dont miss the chance of catching a glimpse of maikos flower petals hanging from the hair ornament in her elaborate hairdo.
